The garden is located in the city of Alice Springs on the impressive part of the Royal Land and covers an area of ​​16 hectares (40 acres). The park was founded in 1956, its main purpose was to preserve the rare desert plants, which were constantly being exterminated. The first curator here was anthropologist Miss Olive Muriel Pink - a fighter for Aboriginal rights.

Initially, the territory of the botanical garden was abandoned, wild rabbits and goats lived here, as well as cattle and other animals that changed the nature of the local vegetation quite significantly. When the researchers started work, they did not find any bushes or trees.

Creating a Botanical Garden Olive Pink

For more than two decades, indigenous inhabitants, led by Miss Pink, enthusiastically struggled with the rather arid conditions of the reserve and virtually no funding. In this area, they planted flowers characteristic of central Australia, succulents, shrubs, trees that can withstand high desert temperatures.

In 1975, anthropologist Miss Olive Pink died, and the government of the state of the Northern Territory decided to run the reserve, which decided not to stop the work of the enthusiast. In 1985, the garden was opened for public visits, and in 1996 it was renamed in honor of its founder.

Olive Pink Botanical Garden built a visit-center, built a network of hiking trails, planted acacias, river eucalyptus trees and other trees. Wishing to maximize the park to desert natural conditions, they placed a well and recreated a unique ecosystem of sand dunes. On the territory of Olive Pink Botanic Garden, in addition to rare plants, you can find a variety of herbivores, including kangaroos. Here also lives a huge number of birds that surprise visitors with their color and pleasing with wonderful singing.
