Casa de la Panera

The visit to Madrid , as a rule, includes a visit to Plaza Mayor Madrid, which is located in the historic center of the Spanish capital. The most famous building of the square is the Casa de la Panaderia (Panaderia).

A bit of history

Panaderia was built at the end of the XV century and almost completely retained its appearance to this day even after a large-scale reconstruction connected with a series of fires that destroyed most of the buildings on the square. In Madrid, this building is considered one of the best examples of the architecture of the Habsburg dynasty. Many palaces and houses throughout Spain were built according to his model: terracotta wall colors, high spiers and a tiled roof, miniature intricate balconies.

The very name Panaderia from Spanish translates as "bakery", originally located on the first floor of the building. The bakers' guild was one of the most influential in the country and could not be located in a modest district on the outskirts. In addition to selling bread, her duties also included the regulation of bread prices throughout the country as the main food product of the nation. The upper floors belonged to the royal family, they have living rooms, bedrooms and rest rooms after events held at the Plaza Mayor. During the bullfight, executions and performances, the family of the monarch and the approximate nobility was located on the central balconies. And during the holidays, the building was given balls and lavish receptions.

The facade of the building after the reconstruction of the end of the XVII century acquired the color of red brick, is replete with stucco and interesting frescoes of mythological themes and scenes from life. Unfortunately, with time the frescoes are gradually being destroyed, but since 1992 the Government of Madrid, according to the approved project, periodically allocates funds for their restoration. In the center of the facade is clearly visible coat of arms of Spain. On the towers are placed a clock and a barometer, which stopped at "good weather" and since then it is worthless without repair.

Panaderia was an important building, as her bakery supplied the entire yard of the monarch. Later, in its walls housed the Academy of Noble Arts, after it - the Academy of History. Once in the building the city hall and even the library worked temporarily. Since 1880, the whole city archive was transported here. Today, in a beautiful building reserved space for the Bureau of Congresses and Tourism Bureau.

And opposite the Casa de Panadería, the eternal rival, Casa de la Carnicium, butcher's shop, still stands majestically.
