Crafts for Pancake week

Carnival came to us from pagan times, and her offensive always marked the onset of spring. The celebration lasts a week and ends with the burning of a straw dummy, and the main dish on it is traditionally pancakes. In this article we will tell you how to make hand-made crafts for Shrovetide.

A lot of symbols are connected with this cheerful holiday, but the main ones are pancakes, the sun, a straw effigy or the Shrovetide doll, amulets. All this can be made from a variety of materials, but previously only natural materials such as straw, spikes, ropes, natural fabrics were used. Now very often it is possible to meet handicrafts from improvised means: plastic plates, paper, threads, sticks, cloth and all the same straw. Today, craftsmen come up with and implement very beautiful related or sewn crafts on the theme of carnival.

Master-class 1: pancakes on carnival

It will take:

• fabric of brown, yellow and beige (sand) color;
• fabric for filling (wool felt);
• sewing machine, thread;
• scissors;
• paper;
• ruler, compasses, pencil.

For work, you should choose a fabric that does not crinkle when cutting.

1. Cut out the paper patterns of circles of diameters 12 cm and 9 cm, as well as a pattern of stains poured into a pancake syrup size less than 10 cm.
2. From a fabric of a beige color we cut out circles drawn on a pattern. They should be twice as much as the right amount of pancakes. In our case, pancakes - 8, then you need 16 pieces.
3. On the fabric of brown color on the syrup pattern, we circle 8 parts and cut them out.
4. From the yellow material, we cut out 8 squares with a side of 2.5 cm for pieces of oil.
5. From the fabric for filling, we cut out 8 circles with a diameter of 9 cm.
6. In the center of the blanks of the syrup stain, we add a yellow square of oil.
7. To the circle of the pancake from above we sew the stain of the syrup.
8. Fold the parts like this: the bottom part, the filler circle and the top part. Sew all the layers together along the edge of the circle, retreating at a distance of 3-4 mm.
9. Our pancakes with syrup and a piece of butter are ready!

Such pancakes can also be made with fruits stitched together or even crocheted.

Master class 2: the sun from straw to pancake week

It will take:

• straw (flat or conventional);
• thread;
• scissors.

1. If you do not have a flat straw, you need to cut it with a sharp knife along one side, soak in water for 15 minutes, and then iron it open with a hot iron. For work, we choose a straw of approximately the same width, if necessary, then it can be carefully cut with scissors.
2. We cut 4 pieces of straw of the same length.
3. Two pieces of fold the cross and heal your fingers in the middle.
4. Two other straws, too, add a cross, connect with the first pair, holding between two fingers as in the figure.
5. Strap a long string of straws, as shown in the picture. Note that the lower straws run from the bottom, and the upper ones from above. If this order is violated, then the design will fall apart as soon as you release it. Do not let go, tie the thread on the knot.
6. For a stronger connection, you need to go through the thread a few times. The photo shows how the reverse side of the product should look.
7. Crop the edges of the straw, as we like.
8. We combine two such blanks from straw, cut off the edges and get a straw sun - one of the symbols of carnival.

Using threads, it is possible to make "lacy" sun out of ordinary straw.

Such souvenirs, made by hand for Shrovetide, will be a pleasant surprise for your friends, and will also be an excellent decoration for the themed party.
