Histology of the cervix

The study through the microscope of the detailed structure of the body cell or part of the tissue - is the essence of histological analysis. In gynecology, the standard point of selection of the histological test is the cervix.

Causes of histology:

  1. This is the only area of the uterus that is accessible for external examination.
  2. Because of the anatomical position, the cervix is more often exposed to damaging agents (infectious, mechanical, viral).
  3. By the nature of the tissue of the cervix, one can draw a conclusion about the structure of the uterus tissue as a whole.
  4. The fetal analysis for the histology of the cervix is done during a routine examination by a gynecologist. For testing, you can take a smear or scraping from the neck or cervical canal .

Histological examination of the cervix

Histology of the cervix is an important diagnostic procedure. It covers both the study of the structure of cells obtained as a result of a smear or scrapes, as well as the examination under a microscope of a tissue taken by a biopsy method. In the everyday practice of doctors, smears and scrapings are often referred to as "cytological studies," and the study of a biopsy specimen as "histology."

Soskob is made with a special tool, almost without causing irritating sensations in a woman. The material of the scraping is placed on a special glass and is processed to prepare a smear suitable for viewing under a microscope.

A biopsy is performed with a special needle. If necessary, a biopsy can be done with preliminary anesthesia. Results of histology of the cervix are available in two to three days. This time is needed to prepare tissue sections, make smears and decipher the histological examination.

According to the results of histology, the doctor can draw conclusions about the state of the epithelial tissue of the cervix: are there any changes in the cells and what kind of character they wear (dysplastic, ectopic, pseudo-erosive, and so on). Based on this analysis, a preliminary diagnosis can be established, which will be refined by other studies.
