How MRI affects pregnancy
Magnetic resonance imaging is based on the effects of electromagnetic waves. This method is considered informative and safe enough. Such a diagnosis does not harm the fetus. But for the appointment of an MRI during pregnancy, the doctor should have a reason.
Indications can be:
- Violations in the work of an organ in a woman;
- the need to clarify the diagnosis based on other studies;
- if it is not possible to conduct an ultrasound, for example, because of the obesity of a future mother;
- to recheck the need to abort pregnancy.
MRI during pregnancy does not cause consequences if contraindications were taken into account when it was prescribed :
- presence in the body of implants, pacemaker;
- tattoos containing metallic dyes;
- claustrophobia is a relative contraindication;
- if the woman's weight is more than the allowable load for the scanner.
It is believed that it is not necessary to carry out MRI during pregnancy in the first weeks, when the effect on the fetus is great on the part of external conditions. After all, the equipment for tomography emits heat, it makes a lot of noise. But it is believed that in complex situations, the procedure is justified even in the first trimester.
