Museum of Granja Colonia


The small and intimate museum of Granja Colonia in Granada is located in the city of Colonia del Sacramento . This is a very unusual institution, where the world's largest collection of color pencils has come from all over the world.

What does the museum look like?

The museum was created and maintained by one family, housed in a very modest building and occupying 4 rooms. You can get acquainted with its exposition for free, so dozens of tourists wander every day. The institution is often visited by the owner of the collection, who gladly shows it to visitors. Among them are mostly various household utensils and household items:

The first exhibits, personally acquired by the owner of the museum, appeared here in 1953. There is also a gramophone, photos and other attributes of the home interior of that time. Just next to the museum, tourists are offered homemade jam, made by the members of the family of the owner Granja Colonia. You can buy not only fruit jam, but also more exotic sweets with onions and peppers.

Particular attention in the exposition is given to the description of the methods of farming in the colonial era, because the word granja from the Spanish is translated as a "colony".

The collection of the institution has 14300 color pencils and is the largest in the world, which confirms the evidence of the Guinness Book of Records and other certificates.

The museum is open from 8:00 to 18:00. A pleasant bonus will be the availability of a children's playground. There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy sandwiches, grilled meat and delicious homemade desserts.

How to see the museum?

The nearest highways to which you can reach the museum are road 1, if you are going from the western part, and the Don Ventura Casal, which stretches from the southeast. Near the establishment, all bus routes from Montevideo to Colonia del Sacramento stop.

A ferry runs from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento. After arrival, you can only take the bus and drive to the museum for about 15 minutes.
