Preparing apple seedlings for winter

A very cold and frosty winter does not pass without a trace for the trees in our gardens. Many plantings can be significantly affected by frost, and some - and completely die. Especially it concerns young seedlings, which have not yet had time to get stronger and to take root well. Let's find out how to prepare apple seedlings for winter to protect your garden from the dangers of winter.

Shelter of apple seedlings for the winter

As a rule, to prepare apple seedlings for the coming winter, they need to be buried in the ground on the site, and in spring they should be planted in a permanent place. We choose a dry and at the same time protected from the winds place in the garden. Then you need to dig a ditch 50 cm deep and about 40 cm wide. It's better if it is located from west to east.

The roots of the seedling before dipping are dipped in clay chatterbox. We put the plant in a groove so that the roots look to the south. Now the seedling can be sprinkled with earth, pre-mixing it with peat and humus. From above, the seedling itself and the place where its roots are located are sheltered with agrofiber . When the snow falls, it will be necessary to constantly monitor that on top of the pricked seedling there is a sufficient snow layer.

Rodents often infect apple seedlings in winter. To prevent this from happening, we need to put mouse grass or coniferous branches under the shelter, which can scare off mice. What else can you wrap the apple seedlings in the winter to protect them from the invasion of rodents? Quite a reliable way - to wrap the trunks of plants with ordinary capron pantyhose, fixing them with scotch tape. Capron hares and mice will not gnaw. In addition, under such a shelter, the trees will not fade and dampen. A more complex way to protect the trunks of young apple trees in winter will be to install a fence made of a metal fine-mesh net. Some gardeners use foamed polyethylene, which is wound around the trunks of apple seedlings, and then no rodents will be afraid of young trees.

As you can see, preparing apple seedlings for the winter is a simple matter, but it should not be neglected.
