Sentimentality

Sometimes suddenly the tears roll without a special reason - just something suddenly was remembered or heard music is so beautiful that it's hard to keep feelings in yourself, but it's not possible to express them in another way. In all these cases, we are talking about a feeling like sentimentality.

What does sentimentality mean?

The meaning of the word sentimentality becomes clear, it is only necessary to discern in it the French root "sentiment", which translates as "feeling." That is, this is a certain property of the psyche, which is characterized by high sensitivity and dreaminess. If a person is in a sentimental mood, then all the impressions that he draws from the outside world do not affect the mind and thoughts, but, first of all, the feelings.

Sentimental people can without any special occasion show enthusiasm, tenderness, emotion and empathy. They do not leave indifferent what others do not pay attention to or react not so sharply.

Increased sentimentality

In general, the concept of increased sentimentality is quite individual and depends on the norms of a single person. For someone in the order of things to let a tear over the book and squeal with joy, by chance meeting an old friend, and someone can not afford to show feelings at the funeral of a loved one, because it considers it a manifestation of weakness.

But if emotional reactions are too strong, a person can not control them, and shows them inappropriately, then such sentimentality can be defined as superfluous.

Increased sentimentality is usually characteristic of women. Men also become more sensitive over time, this is due to age-related changes, in particular, to a decrease in the production of male hormones, but rarely when they reach the level of the beautiful half of humanity.

Excessive sentimentality can be permanent and situational. If you are accustomed to not keep feelings in yourself, and openly express them in sometimes eccentric ways, and this does not stop you from living at all, then do not worry.

But situational sentimentality can manifest itself even among reserved people in connection with a certain mood, state of health or event. We always become more vulnerable under the burden of problems or when something hurts. Also, there is a risk of losing control over the expression of emotions if you hold them back for a long time. Convincing yourself that strong people do not cry, and ladies always behave with restraint, you literally doom yourself to failure, which can happen suddenly.

How to get rid of sentimentality?

To begin with, you need to get rid of it only if it really hinders you. Otherwise, such violence against one's nature is completely unjustified.

Try to realize that it is not always necessary to restrain emotions, there are situations in which they can not only be shown, but also necessary, because at least this brings people together. Most likely, it's worth keeping oneself in hand at work, but in the family circle and alone with you it's far from necessary to be iron. Do not avoid close contacts, for any person it is extremely important not to experience all the moments of joy and sadness in solitude.

Clearly identify those situations in which you can manifest emotions and try to experience as many senses in them and concentrate more on them. This will help you better understand yourself and study your reactions. You will always know what to expect in the next moment. In addition, emotions will not accumulate and will not be able to suddenly break out.

Try to make this change in your life and after some time arrange yourself a kind of "test for sentimentality". After all, if you consider yourself too unrestrained, you probably have situations in which it manifests itself. Now it's easy to get into them, for example, to include a film that you could not see through to the end because of the rolling tears. The reaction may not change, but, in that case, one should once again think carefully about whether it is necessary to fight sentimentality or whether it should be accepted.
