Sights of Georgia

Georgia is a very colorful country from the point of view of tourism. It is wonderfully intertwined with modern European and ancient Asian traditions. In this article we will examine what are the main attractions in Georgia, its most beautiful and interesting places.

The main sights of Georgia and Tbilisi

Of course, the focus of tourism in this country is its capital - Tbilisi. The most notable here is the old part of the city - narrow brick streets, ancient tiled roofs, as well as structures such as Sameba Cathedral, Anchiskhati Church and Metekhi, Narikala Fortress, etc.

The new district of Tbilisi is fundamentally different from the old city and impresses with its non-standard, rather even futuristic buildings: it is the bridge of the world, the park of Rica, modern buildings of hotels.

Of the architectural attractions of Georgia, one can not help noting the Cathedral of Alaverdi XI century buildings. At that time it was the highest building ever built on the territory of the country. The cathedral became not only the religious center of Kakheti, but also a mighty fortress. In the cathedral the fortress wall, as well as old paintings on the inner walls, were preserved.

Fans of unusual natural phenomena and, in particular, speleology will like visiting the Georgian karst caves - Sataplia and Tskhaltubo. They represent a long string of caves stretching for many kilometers. Inside you can see the most beautiful grottoes, mysterious lakes and underground rivers.

Batumi is also a beautiful resort town of Georgia, where there are also attractions. The brightest and most memorable of them is a musical fountain in the center of the city. A lot of cities in the world can boast of such a work of modern art, but the Batumi fountain simply amazes imagination with its three-dimensional holographic image combined with music, which creates an unusual illusion of "dancing" water.

Another traditional Batumi tourist place is the sculpture "Love". It reaches 8 m and is a kind of symbol of love, harmony and movement: a man and a woman, moving towards each other, gradually and inevitably become a single whole.

Svateniya is an area of Georgia, which is more popular among lovers of eco-tourism . You can come here at any time of the year to enjoy the natural beauties of this so-called Golden Fleece Country. It does not matter at what time of the year you visit Svateniye - the versatility of her nature can not fail to charm the true connoisseur.

Holy places of Georgia

Georgia is captivated not only by the beauty, but also by the number of temple structures concentrated in a relatively small territory of the country.

Be sure to visit the oldest monastery of Betania, located just 16 km from Tbilisi. This functioning monastery is an excellent example of the Georgian temple architecture. In the stone building of the church, ancient icons and frescoes with images of Georgian kings and scenes from the Scriptures were preserved. According to legends, Queen Tamara often came here. Another interesting fact is that Betania is one of the few religious centers that conducted services in Soviet times.

Unusual monastic complex "Vardzia", built in the distant XII - XIII centuries, is located on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that the premises of the monastery are located in a cave that extends deep into the mountain for as much as 50 m, while the height of the complex reaches about 25 m. Vardzia stretches along the river shore for almost a kilometer. Here you can see not only the ancient churches and chapels, but also other, equally interesting premises of the monastery: cells and libraries, refectory and baths. At one time, "Vardzia" was also a fortress, protecting its population from raids by the Iranians.
