Viaduct Landwasser

In Switzerland, in the canton of Graubünden, the arc of the railway viaduct Landwasser was built across the river. This is one of the most beautiful railway bridges in the world. The height from the base of the longest support and to the beginning of the railway rails is 65 meters, the length from the entrance to the rock and to the base of the viaduct is 136 meters. The bridge consists of six arches, the length of which is 20 meters, and has one track for trains. What else is interesting about this attraction , we will tell further.

Building

During the construction of the largest rail network in Switzerland , a large number of obstacles had to be overcome. The Canton of Graubünden has a rocky terrain, and the high mountains complicate the erection of the bridge. The task was very difficult because of the landscape of the area and the Landwasser River flowing in the canyon, which would simply wash away the scaffolding. Therefore, we chose a new and unknown way of construction in Switzerland. At the foot of the rocks, piles were driven in and already a metal frame was assembled on them, and this construction was topped with bricks made of dolomite and limestone. Bricks at this height were delivered using an electric winch. The total volume of masonry is 9200 cubic meters. m.

Nowadays

During the restoration work from May to September 2009, the Landwasser viaduct did not stop functioning, but to prevent the worker from interfering, the viaduct was completely covered with a red cloth, which looked very nice. The total cost of the restoration was 4.5 million Swiss francs.

To date, the Landwasser viaduct is the symbol of the Albulic Railway, here is the most popular route in Switzerland - Bernina Express . Every day 60 trains pass through the bridge, which makes about 22 thousand routes a year.
