Drotaverin is a myotropic antispasmodic having a vasodilating action. The drug is a synonym (absolute analogue) of such a popular drug as No-shpa .
Composition and form of release of Drotaverine
Drotaverine is available in the form of tablets and a solution for injection.
In one tablet of the drug contains 40 mg of drotaverine in the form of hydrochloride, as well as auxiliary substances - lactose, starch, povidone, magnesium stearate. In addition, there are tablets Drotaverin forte, in which the concentration of the active substance is 80 mg. Tablets are yellow, small, biconvex, packed in blisters of 10 pieces and in cardboard packs. Drotaverine in ampoules is used for intramuscular (very rarely - for intravenous) injections. One ampoule contains 2 ml of a solution with an active substance concentration of 20 mg / ml.

Drotaverin lowers the tone and motility of smooth muscles, relaxes it and removes spasms, moderately dilates blood vessels, has a mild hypotensive effect.
Drotaverin is most often used for various pains of a spasmodic nature, although it is not an anesthetic. This is due to the fact that pain is not a disease, but a symptom. By removing the spasm of the muscles or blood vessels, drotaverin thereby eliminates the cause that caused the pain. That's why Drotaverin often helps with headaches and menstrual pain. With pain caused by trauma, inflammation or other pathological processes, this drug is ineffective and does not have an analgesic effect.
Drotaverine is used:
- With spasms of smooth muscles of the internal organs (cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholecystolithiasis, cholangiolithiasis, papillitis, spastic colitis, intestinal colic).
- To relieve spasms in diseases of the genitourinary system (nephrolithiasis, cystitis, pyelitis, ureterolithiasis, proctitis ).
- With some gynecological diseases, in the first place - pain with menstruation. In addition, it is used to eliminate spasms of smooth muscles of the uterus during pregnancy.
- With headaches caused by stress, lack of sleep, increased psychological stress, physical stress (especially muscle strain in the cervical region). Drotaverine can also help with headaches caused by increased blood pressure, but in this case it is more effective in combination with antihypertensive drugs.
- As a preparatory tool for certain diagnostic and medical procedures (catheterization of ureters, cholecystography).
- Drotaverine in combination with analgin is a popular means for lowering the temperature, which often acts even more effectively than specialized antipyretic agents.
Contraindications for the administration of Drotaverine
The drug is contraindicated in:
- severe hepatic, renal or heart failure;
- deficiency of lactose;
- adenoma of the prostate;
- angle-closure glaucoma.
It is used with caution in atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries and with low arterial pressure.
Dosage and Administration
Tablets are drunk at any time of the day, without chewing. Take the drug can be up to 80 mg (2 tablets) per reception, up to three times a day. The effect begins to occur about 15 minutes after administration, but maximum efficiency is achieved after 40-45 minutes.
Drotaverina injections are made intramuscularly, 1-2 ampoules (up to 80 mg of active substance) per injection. The effect is observed 2 minutes after the injection.
The drug is intended for symptomatic treatment, and more than 3 days without consulting a doctor to use it is not recommended.
