When to transplant lilies in the fall?

Beautiful lily flowers - perennial plants that adorn many gardens, flower beds and front gardens. However, if these plants are not transplanted for a long time, their flowers will become small, and the flowerbed itself will look neglected. That this did not happen, lilies should be transplanted approximately every 3-4 years. So it is necessary to act, for example, with the "Royal" lily. Some varieties and species, for example, Asian and tubular hybrids of lilies, need an annual transplant, others, such as "Martagon" and American hybrids, can be moved to another place once in ten years.

The question of the frequency of transplantation of flowers we found, but many gardeners are wondering whether it is possible to transplant the bulbs of the lily in the fall, and when it should be done.

When can I transplant the lilies to another location?

The most favorable time for transplanting lilies is of course autumn. During this period the bulbs of this plant are already in the so-called rest period, they have accumulated enough nutrients, and will easily transfer the transplant. And it should be remembered that the transplantation of lilies, which blossom early, can begin as early as the end of August, and the lilies of the average flowering period are usually transplanted in September, a month after its end. In this situation, the bulbs will have time to settle down and grow stronger until the winter. But the "Tubular" and "Oriental" hybrids of lilies bloom to the coldest, and therefore it is unlikely to replant them in the autumn. So, if the autumn frosts come early, these lily varieties should be transplanted in the spring.

If you transplant the lily at minus temperature, then the bulbs can be too supercooled, and the growth of their roots will stop. Therefore, if you were late for the transplant for various reasons, dig out the bulbs of lilies, wrap them in thick paper or newspaper and store until spring on the bottom shelf in the refrigerator. You can pack them in a plastic bag, after having done holes in it, wrap bulbs in dry peat or sphagnum moss and store in temperature conditions from 0 to + 5 ° С.

In warm areas, you can transplant lilies and later, while it should be remembered that if immediately after the transplant comes the cold, then the lilies should be sheltered for the winter . For this use dry oak leaves. In addition, the next year, such lilies can blossom later than usual.

Experienced growers recommend lily transplantation when the average daily air temperature is not lower than + 10 ° С.

Planting lilies in the garden

Lilies prefer sunny places, but they can also bloom in the penumbra. The soil beneath them must be fertile and well drained. For transplantation, the nest of lilies is excavated from the ground, divided into bulbs, pruned by their roots, leaving about 10 cm. Decaying scales should be removed. Do not dry the dug out bulbs, but they must be immediately planted in a new place, making sure that their roots do not bend upward. The depth of planting is three lily bulb heights. Between the flowers, the distance should be about 15 cm. In the holes before planting lilies, you can add large sand, which will not allow the bulbs to dry out. In a hot time lilies need watering, but loosening the soil near the stems, these plants do not like.

For a successful landing, you should know that purchased lilies are planted only in the spring, but in autumn only those bulbs that have not been stored and just dug out of the earth are transplanted. Perhaps they grew up on your site, or you bought them from local florists.

There is an opinion that lilies, transplanted in the spring, develop better than those that spent the winter in frozen ground. But it's still up to you to decide when to replace the lilies in the garden, based on the climatic features of your area.
