The drug Drotaverin refers to antispasmodics and vasodilators. Particularly active drug acts on the smooth muscles of the digestive, cardiovascular and urogenital systems, as well as bile ducts. Drotaverin contributes to:
- decreased muscle tone;
- elimination of spasmodic pain;
- the widening of the lumen of the vessels, and, thanks to this, the better supply of oxygen to the tissues of the body.
Indications for use Drotaverina hydrochloride
Indications for use of the drug Drotaverin are based on the pharmacological action of the drug on smooth muscles. It should be noted that the indications for the use of tablets and solution for injection of drotaverina hydrochloride are similar.
Drotaverin and in the form of tablets, and in the form of injections, is recommended for use in order to stop spasms and eliminate spasmodic pain in a number of diseases and conditions, including:
- cholecystitis ;
- cholelithiasis;
- stomach ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
- stomach cramps;
- spastic colitis;
- constipation of spastic origin;
- proctitis ;
- pyelitis;
- cystitis;
- nephrolithiasis;
- urethrolithiasis;
- headache due to spasm of cerebral vessels;
- dysmenorrhea;
- spasm of smooth muscles during pregnancy, mainly when there is a threat of spontaneous abortion;
- fights.
In the instructions for use, it is emphasized that the solution of the drug Drotaverin is intended primarily for intramuscular administration, but with renal or hepatic colic, the drug can be administered intravenously, and in the case of peripheral circulation, intra-arterial. And because of the risk of developing collapse, the injection solution should be administered slowly, for the patient, only the prone position is permissible.
Drotaverine is often prescribed for individual instrumental studies, including cholecystography.
Attention! To relieve gastrointestinal spasms and in case of peptic ulcer, Drotaverin is recommended to be taken only in combination with other medications.
Contraindications to the use of Drotaverine
Drotaverin, like other antispasmodic vasodilator drugs, has a number of contraindications and limitations to use. Among the absolute contraindications:
- individual sensitivity to drug components;
- severe cardiac, renal or hepatic insufficiency;
- severe arterial hypotension;
- congenital lactose deficiency, galactosemia, and glucose-galactose absorption disorder (the drug contains lactose).
The tablet form of Drotaverine is not used in therapy of patients up to 3 years.
Caution should be given to Drotaverin in the following diseases:
- hyperplasia of the prostate;
- atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries;
- angle-closure glaucoma.

Drotaverine is undesirable to take behind the wheel of the car and when working with potentially dangerous mechanisms due to the fact that after taking the drug, attention and reactivity are somewhat reduced.

As a rule, the drug is well tolerated by patients, but sometimes side effects are possible:
- nausea, vomiting;
- arterial hypotension;
- tachycardia, arrhythmia;
