Maardu

One of the Estonian cities of Maardu, located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, attracts tourists thanks to the amazing scenery and clean sea air. The borders of this small but very interesting city stretch from Lake Maardu to the Pirita River. The nearby towns of this settlement are considered to be only two Viimsi and Jõelähtme parishes.

History of Maardu

Maardu is a city that has been carrying on the history of its existence since 1939. In those days it was considered a small industrial village where phosphate deposits were found. Despite its industrial development, Maardu even before 1963 had the status of a township, after which it was transferred to Tallinn and already in 1980 received the long-awaited status of the city.

Maardu Description

The total area of ​​the city is approximately 22.6 km², where almost 17 thousand people live. Nowadays the city is divided into three full-fledged districts, among which there is a zone of industrial production, the zone of Staro-Narva highway combined with the territory of the port of Muuga and a residential area. A competent distribution of the city's territory allows local residents to create favorable environmental conditions not only for themselves, but also for holidaymakers.

In the modern city of Maardu live more than 40 different nationalities, most of whom are Russian. On the territory of the city three schools are equipped, among them two with a Russian slant and only one with Estonian. It is also worth noting that the city has an art school and a local newspaper, which is released immediately in two languages. In addition to educational institutions in the settlement, you can find a cognitive library, fascinating museums, an amazing House of Culture, as well as a chic sports complex.

Maardu is considered an industrial settlement and therefore until recently it did not have its own Orthodox church. But already in 1992 enthusiasts decided to build their own church, the project of which was designed by the architect Vlasov. This church was built in two floors of red brick and in 1998 was consecrated archbishop.

In the city there is a lot of precipitation even in the hottest months, and the average temperature reaches only 5.3 degrees.   2. Other interesting surrounding places include Lake Maardu . Previously, it was known as Lake Lyvakandi. It has an oval shape and an area of ​​170 hectares. The depth of the lake is 3 m, and it itself is at an altitude of 33 m above sea level. The water level is replenished by the flowing small streams, but only the Kroodi stream flows out of it.
  3. Another place for entertainment is located on the north side of the lake - this is the beach .
  4. In the city, it is interesting to visit the Orthodox Church of the Archangel Michael and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses , as well as the Lutheran Church. By the decision of the city authorities, the local cemetery was divided into three parts: Orthodox, Lutheran, Muslim.
  5. The manor is the main architectural landmark. In the historical chronicles the first building associated with the Maardu is the Manor. The scientists discovered a note on the complex, dating from 1397. An interesting architectural ensemble gathers huge crowds of tourists, because it is made in the original style. This representative building makes a huge impression. The Lord's house served as a haven for Peter I, and the owner of the motley gallery was the wife of the emperor, later the Empress Catherine I.
