Spanish newt

Triton is an amphibian, which can live not only in nature, but also in aquariums. Often lovers of exotic pets have their own homes at home. The Spanish newt is a kind of tailed amphibians that easily tolerate captivity. This representative of the family of real salamanders is also called the Spanish needleish newt, thanks to its appearance.

general characteristics

The Spanish newt is a resident of Portugal and the west of Spain. In the wild, he feels best at an altitude of 100-800 meters above sea level.

The length of the newt is 10 centimeters. Female size slightly larger than males, but the latter have legs slightly longer. The tail of the newt is half the body of the amphibian. When the newts have a mating season, the males have a crest on the tail. The eyes of the amphibian are small, convex.

The coloring of the newt can be olive, brown or dirty yellow. Sometimes it can be black. Usually females are painted darker. There may be spots on the body. The older the animal, the lighter the color of the skin.

If the newt lives in water, its skin becomes smooth and shiny. Representatives of this species that live on land have rough and rough skin.

Behavior of the newt

It's no wonder, but needley newts are tamed. Over time, they get used to the owner who feeds them. When a person bends over an aquarium, a newt can swim specially as a sign of greeting. In the aquarium, the newts behave very calmly, for hours they can simply hang in an upright position.

Triton content

The content of the Spanish newt is not as difficult as it may seem. In one aquarium, several individuals can coexist. For each newt you need 15-20 liters of water. The water that will be poured into the aquarium is defended for several days. Filtered and boiled water can not be used. The aquarium must be equipped with a filter in order to maintain cleanliness. Aeration of the aquarium is not needed, because the newts do not breathe in the water. For this they come up.

Soil for the aquarium is also not needed. Basically, aquarists sprinkle the bottom with granite chips. It is necessary to have green plants in the aquarium. For the aquarium with newts you can choose the most unpretentious plants. It is also important to equip spaces with different aquarium decor. This is done not only with aesthetic motives, but also because the newts are a little shy, and they are bored to be constantly in sight. Often they want to hide from prying eyes, and then different houses, clay skulls, snags will come in handy.

Tritons get along with aquarium fish. But if you do not feed him in time, fish and fellow newts can suffer. This amphibian can bite off the paw of another newt, which in principle is not terrible, because with the help of regeneration the limb can recover. Periodically, newts can dump the skin.

For a newt at home, it is important to comply with the temperature regime. The optimum temperature is 15-20 degrees.

Feeding the newt should take place every day. They give bloodworms, earthworms, flies. This is all finely chopped and thrown into the aquarium. It is important to give them vitamin complexes. Diseases of the Spanish newt can be due to improper feeding or maintenance.

Reproduction of Spanish newts

Sexual maturation of newts reaches a year. Reproduction is possible from September to May. A feature of the breeding of Spanish newts are mating games. They can make sounds that look like croaking frogs. During fertilization, the male and female swim, as if embracing. After this, the female lays about 1000 eggs.
