Suan Forest

Not far from the capital of Belgium there is a rather large picturesque forest area, which covers an area of 40 square meters and is called Suan forest, or the forest of Suansye.

General information about the Suan forest

In 1963, its territory was divided between three regions of the state. The largest part of the array - 56 percent went to Flanders, 38 percent to the Brussels Capital District and only 6 percent to Wallonia. In addition, 7.9% of the territory of the Suan forest (this is 3.47 square kilometers) from different sides of the border were included in the Belgian Royal family and became known as the "Capuchin Forest". The name dates back to the end of the 18th century, when a monastery settlement was established here, which founded eighteen monasteries on this site.

In the Ancient Ages and in the Middle Ages, the Suansea forest had an area of 200 square kilometers and was impassable, extensive jungle, and it was always difficult to navigate. Thanks to this fact, the Frankish tribes, during the war in the fifth-seventh centuries, could not overcome the territory and gain access to the province of Wallonia.

Unfortunately, the rapid development of civilization led to active cutting down of trees. Trade contacts between Walloons and Flemings intensified, so a road was laid through the forest and new settlements were built nearby. Due to all this, the territory of the Suansea forest has been reduced almost fivefold.

In Belgium, the territory of the Suan forest is inhabited by various mammals: moose, squirrels, hares, wild boars, and a large number of birds.
