How to prepare a spirea for winter?

The good news for all new spiree owners is the fact that due to the high winter hardiness level, most species of this shrub require no special preparation for wintering. As shown by specially conducted tests, the critical for virtually all spirits frosts is a drop in temperature to -50 degrees. Less faint frosts do no harm to this plant. But if the winter promises to be frosty and snowless, it is worthwhile to carry out some activities to prepare the spiraea for the winter:

  1. After the end of flowering, carry out sanitary pruning of the bush, cutting out all weak, sick and dead shoots. But the molding pruning of the bush is best left to spring, so as not to weaken the plant before the winter period.
  2. After the end of the leaf fall, loosen the ground around the bush, abundantly water and warm the spiraea for the winter with a layer of fallen leaves, peat or sawdust to a height of at least 15-20 cm. This shelter will allow the bush to preserve the root system, increase its frost resistance and protect it from freezing the tips of branches . Those tips of the branches, which are still frozen, are removed during the spring molding pruning.
