Swollen labia

Many women, faced with an intimate problem, do not dare to immediately turn to a qualified specialist. They include embarrassment, fear and horror from a possible diagnosis. One of these delicate problems is edema of the labia. Sometimes this inflammatory process can be accompanied by other manifestations - pain, itching, redness, discharge. However, before deciding what to do, it is necessary to find out the reason why the labia has swollen.

Why swell the labia?

The reasons for this manifestation can be different: both requiring specific treatment, and not.

If the small labia was swollen after sex, then there's nothing to worry about. The labia has a very delicate structure and abundant blood supply. In addition, they contain a huge number of nerve endings and venous vessels. Due to strong sexual arousal and stimulation of the labia, blood flows to them and they can increase in size. This condition does not require any medical intervention, and swelling occurs some time after the act.

It is also known that during pregnancy a woman's blood flow increases to the genital organs. At the same time, fat is deposited in the abdomen and large labia. This is considered the norm and is explained by the fact that the female body creates conditions for maintaining the heat and protecting the child in the future.

But, unfortunately, sometimes this manifestation can be a sign of various diseases. Thus, if the labia is swollen and aching, chewy whites are given off with a rather unpleasant acidic smell, then this can indicate diseases such as thrush (candidiasis). This is the most common disease of our time, which affects the mucous membrane of the labia and vagina.

In addition to this, as a result of chronic candidiasis or a prolonged intake of antibiotics, a woman can develop vulvodynia. With this disease, in addition to swelling and pain from any touch to the labia, pain is seen near the entrance to the vagina.

In the event that the labia is swollen, itchy, and pain during urination, there are yellowish-green discharge, all of which can indicate the presence of diseases such as vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), vulvitis (inflammation of the vulva) or vulvovaginitis inflammation of the vagina and external genitalia). As a rule, these diseases result from non-observance of hygiene of the genitals, frequent changes in the sexual partner, traumatic injuries, abortions, etc.

Another cause of swelling and pain of the labia may be bartholinitis. Due to the actions of various infectious agents, the Bartholin glands are blocked, which are located on each of the labia. This leads to a tightening in place of their location and strong pain during and after sex.

Swollen labia - treatment

If an edema of the labia occurs, do not delay the moment of the visit to the doctor and wait until everything goes by itself. With this delicate problem, you should contact a gynecologist or dermatovenerologist. After careful examination and delivery of specific tests, the doctor will prescribe the necessary treatment, which depends on the reasons that caused this problem. In most cases, with the timely identification of causes and subsequent treatment, it is possible to get rid of such diseases quite quickly. Remember that this condition does not just cause considerable discomfort, but it is also quite dangerous for a woman's health.
