Akashi-Kaike

One of the longest structures on the planet is the Akashi-Kaiky (Akashi Kaiky подвес) suspension bridge, which is located in Japan . It is also known as the Pearl Bridge.

Description of sight

Akashi-Kaike is a six-lane automobile bridge connecting the cities of Awaji (Shikoku Island) and Kobe (Honshu). The settlements are divided by Akashi Strait.

The structure has a length of 3911 m and a height of 282.8 m. The distance between the central supports is 1991 m, the lateral spans are separated by a gap of 960 m.

The bridge was designed with special technical features in mind. It can withstand extreme loads, strong winds up to 286 km / h (80 m / s) and earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8 points, as well as resisting sea currents. These indicators could be achieved by using two hinged stiffening beams and a unique system of pendulums working in resonance with the overall structure of the structure.

Even scientists have created a special super-strong concrete. It has the properties to freeze in any medium and not dissolve in water. Right next to the Akashi Strait, a factory was built to produce raw materials. Here, 2 huge shapes were built to pour the pylons into them later. They were flooded with an accuracy of 10 cm, despite the strong undercurrent.

Features of construction

The government of Japan decided to create the Akashi-Kaike bridge in the middle of the twentieth century. This happened after 168 terrible children died during the terrible storm on two ferries. They started building the bridge only in 1988.

The cable for the bridge was also developed using special technologies. To do this, a wire was created, the strength of which was increased by a factor of 2 compared to conventional structures. In one strand, scientists collected 127 five-millimeter wires, and then 290 of these bundles were fastened together. The guide rope connecting the pylons was pulled with helicopters.

Builders worked in harsh conditions, because they were hampered not only by passing ships (about 1,400 ships daily), but also salt water with a strong current and a fairly soft bottom.

The official opening of the Akashi-Kaike suspension bridge took place in 1998 on April 5. During its erection it was involved:

Today, the fare for the bridge is about $ 20. Because of the high cost of many, as before? cross the strait by ferry or take the bus.

Those wishing to admire the Akashi-Kaik can do this from the city of Kobe, where a special concrete promenade is built. The site has a length of 317 m, and it offers a stunning view of the bridge. Especially it is beautiful at night, when it is illuminated by tens of thousands of lights.
