Benign positional dizziness

Women often suffer from dizziness. Usually this happens after a sharp rise in the body after sitting or lying down, but sometimes a symptom occurs when the head position changes. This pathology, benign positional dizziness, is rarely diagnosed due to the absence of any characteristic features inherent only to it, and the rapid disappearance of clinical manifestations.

Causes of benign positional vertigo

It is known that the problem in question is associated with a violation of the distribution of statoliths (clusters of calcite crystals) in the inner ear, but it was not possible to identify its exact causes. Sometimes a paroxysmal vertigo triggers a traumatic brain injury , as well as infection with a viral infection.

Symptoms of benign positional vertigo

The clinical picture of pathology is similar in many respects to other diseases, for example, aura in chronic migraine, infectious lesions and cervical osteochondrosis. To distinguish from them benign positional dizziness, it is important to pay attention to the following features:

  1. The disease is characterized by seizures that unfoundedly start and end suddenly, the head does not swirl constantly.
  2. Join vegetative symptoms (fever, pale skin, increased sweating, nausea, sometimes - vomiting).
  3. Duration of dizziness does not exceed 24 hours.
  4. The patient feels well during the period between seizures.
  5. The body recovers very quickly at the beginning of therapy, no longer than 1 month.

Vertigo is strongly pronounced with sharp turns of the head. If you are in a state of rest, then there will be no seizure. It is worth noting that with the described violation there are no headaches, noise or ringing in the ears, loss of consciousness.

Treatment of benign positional paroxysmal dizziness

The only effective technique for today is the performance of special exercises that support the vestibular apparatus and contribute to the dissolution of calcite deposits in the middle ear. One of the positions (Epley maneuver):

  1. Sit on the bed, straighten the torso.
  2. Turn the head in the direction in which there are problems with the inner ear by 45 degrees.
  3. Lie on your back, stay in this position for at least 2 minutes.
  4. Lying to turn the head to the other side by 90 degrees. Also stay in this position for at least 2 minutes.
  5. Turn the body in the direction in which the head is inclined, the nose must be lowered downwards. Remain in position for 2 minutes.
  6. Return to the initial position (sedentary) for 30 seconds.
  7. Repeat the procedure twice more.
