Black River - Great swamps

Great swamps are located on both banks of the Black River, which was named after the dark color of the water, caused by the thickness of decaying vegetation. In the park area grows a lot of unique tropical plants. In the lower part of the river, in the estuaries, common and mangrove swamps, nature created an ideal environment for the dwelling of a large number of species of fish. These include mangrove, mullet, snook, as well as lobsters and other aquatic inhabitants. There are crocodiles and a large number of different birds, including osprey and herons.

How to get to the sights?

You can get to the Great Swamp by reaching the dam on the Black River. The latter is in close proximity to the Jamaican city of the same name. You can get here from Kingston or Portmore along the T1, and then on A2. From Kingston the road will take about 2.5 hours, from Portmor - a little less.

You can visit the park at any time of the year, but it is better to do it in the dry season - either in summer or in the period from December to April.
