Cathedral of Santa Maria

The main temple of Comayagua is the Cathedral of Santa Maria. It is located right in the center of the city, on its central square. This church is very beautiful and is the main decoration of both Plaza Central Leon Alvarado Square and the city as a whole. The temple was opened on December 8, 1711.

Description of the Cathedral

The temple of St. Mary was built in a colonial style. To our great regret, only four of the sixteen originally built here have survived to this day. All of them are wooden and decorated with intricate paintings and unusual ornaments made of gilded leaves. The main altar of the Cathedral of Santa Maria is also its main decoration. On it there are statues of many saints, and in the floor part of the altar the gaze of visitors is riveted with lining of precious metals.

The belltower of the cathedral is decorated with 8 bells, on its 3rd floor, the oldest clock in Central America still functions. In 1636 Philip II, the Spanish king, gave them to the city.
