Komondor or the Hungarian Shepherd does not have exact information about its origin, but most likely, its pedigree is about 1000 years old. There is a legend that once the shepherds found the cubs. They gave them water and those puppies that drank wolfish, killed, and those who drank dog-like, took with them. Over time, the blood of wolves and dogs mixed up and turned out to be a sheepdog komondor.

Initially, the Komondor breed was common in the Black Sea region, where dogs were used as shepherds. During the Mongol-Tatar invasion, they, together with people, moved to the territory of modern Hungary. There they still live.

This breed of dog was called "komondor" from the Italian word, which in translation means "king of dogs". From the Hungarian language the name of the breed can be translated as "calm dog".

Characteristics of the breed

The Komondor Dog is one of the largest dogs in the world. The height of the dog is 80 cm, and the wool gives its appearance an even larger volume. But the appearance of the sheepdog does not cause fear, but only respect and admiration.

Komondor puppies have a soft and wavy fur, and only with age it forms into cords. The head of the dog resembles a woolen ball. Wool falls on the eyes, but it does not cause the dog any inconvenience. The wool of the Hungarian Shepherd grows all his life.

Komondor is a dog that has a white color. But for many years, experts have tried to grow dogs with "colored" hair. Today there are black Komondors, but they are not recognized as purebred breeds. They are called mestizos and are not considered a single breed.
