Memory Park

In the history of each country there are such events that nobody is proud of. But the mass death of innocent people always remains in the memory of the people. The regret and the thirst for redemption make one remember the mistakes of the past. Argentina did not become an exception in this regard. It was in the edification of the descendants, in order to prevent the bloody terror in the future, and the Memory Park in Buenos Aires was founded.

What is a Memory Park?

On the banks of the La Plata River, in the area of Belgrano, there are 14 hectares of space where fun is not always appropriate. It remembers and mourns the innocent victims of the "dirty war" in Argentina, which took place from 1976 to 1983. Then tens of thousands of ordinary people died as a result of state terror.

Nearby is the military airport, from which the notorious "death flights" were sent, when people were unconscious by barbiturates and dumped from the side of the aircraft into the water. The La Plata River here also assumes a symbolic value, because it involuntarily became an instrument that took thousands of innocent souls.

Memory Park is a collective concept, and its basis is to honor the memory of all victims of state terrorism. In the center there is a memorial - four concrete slabs, on which 30 thousand plates of porphyry with the names of victims are attached. They are arranged in chronological order, and in addition to the names, carry information about the age, indicate the year of the murder, and in the case of some women - the fact of pregnancy.

Architectural space

In addition to the main memorial, there are 18 different monuments in the Memory Park. All of them in one form or another support the main theme of the monument. One of the sculptures is located directly in the waters of the river, showing human hopelessness and doom.

The Baudizzone-Lestard studio worked on the design and architecture of the park. Their original decision regarding the memorial visually creates a sensation of an open wound on the body of the earth, which certainly only strengthens the atmosphere.

How to get to the Park of Memory?

Next to the park there is a bus stop Intendente Güiraldes 22, through which routes Nos. 33A, 33B, 33C, 33D pass. The nearest metro station is Congreso de Tucumán.
