Preparing the garden for winter

All of us are getting ready for the winter and gradually go to the cold regime, warming up and reviewing things, warming the balconies and loggias. But our kitchen garden requires preparation, and sometimes there are much more work.

The main stages of preparing the garden for winter

In this issue, there are many contradictions and disagreements among truck farmers. It is not surprising that a beginner summer resident sometimes hears completely opposite advice. We turn to the classic list of activities for preparing the garden for winter:

  1. The cornerstone and still remains the question of whether to dig a vegetable garden for the winter. Here the opinions are divided, and the more precise will be the question, how and how to fertilize the garden for the winter. Adherents of the so-called natural type of agriculture are urging not to dig up the soil, especially to a greater depth. After the release of beds, a mixture of manure and leaves is laid on them, it is possible to add sawdust. Concerning manure, the opinion is also twofold: how to fertilize the garden for the winter, if there is no farm, and you have to buy everything? Some recommend buying manure, others dissuade in favor of ash, referring to a large number of diseases in purchased manure. That is why the answer to the question of whether to dig a vegetable garden for the winter is sometimes ambiguous.
  2. When we prepare the garden for the winter, we return the soil to its efforts. Namely, we fall asleep with empty beds of tops, leaves after their shedding and needles, all this is covered with cardboard. This will enrich the soil with nutrients, and will save from frostbite.
  3. Instead of digging up the garden, a good alternative to winter will be the sowing of siderates . This is also a way to not change the location of crops, something like a replacement for crop rotation. However, the syderates are not planted without taking into account the plants that grew and will grow in the garden. But it is not worthwhile to seal them in the soil, since worms and bacteria will do all the work for you.
  4. As we prepare the garden for the winter, a very large stock of fillers for the compost pits appears: these are leaves and food residues. Using the standard technique of filling the compost hole, you will receive fertilizers by spring for new plantings.
