The Museum of History in Riga Castle


The National Museum of Latvian History is the largest repository of all kinds of materials related to the Latvian culture. It has been known since 1896 as a museum of the Scientific Committee of the Riga Latvian Society.

It was built as the residence of the Grand Master of the Livonian Order. Today, in the castle built on the banks of the Daugava River in the Middle Ages, there is the residence of the President of the Republic of Latvia and the Latvian National Museum of History.

The Museum of History in Riga Castle is one of the oldest museums in Europe. The history of this largest collection of exhibits began in 1773. Doctor Nikolaus von Himsel, who for many years collected material on the history of Latvia, decided to provide a collection for viewing. The whole exposition is devoted to the history of Riga, it has many subjects and documents on the development and development of the city as a capital.

The Museum of History in the Riga Castle has almost a million exhibits. The collection is divided into several sections. There are archaeological Latvian finds of the 9th millennium BC. In the ethnological section clothes and tools of labor are presented from the 17th to the 20th century. Photos have appeared since the second half of the 19th century. On them it is possible to judge the life of Latvians at that time.

After the proclamation of Latvia's independence in 1918, the collection passed into the hands of the state, and in 1920 the History Museum settled in the Riga Castle. The period from 1920 to 1940 was very successful for the museum. The following exhibitions were opened:

A new permanent exhibition was created in the museum, covering the period from 8,000 BC. until 1941. A number of temporary exhibitions are held annually on the basis of the main collections.

The Museum of History is constantly being improved. Since 2005, the permanent exposition includes stands for visually impaired people and special educational programs for pupils have been organized. By 2010 the museum of Park Araishi and the Latvian Museum of Culture Dauderite joined the Museum of History in Riga Castle.
