The Poleg River

Those who go to rest in Netanya , it is worth a stroll along the banks of the river Poleg. It flows through the Sharon Valley from the historic site of the kibbutz Ramat and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The river attracts tourists with picturesque landscapes that stretch along its banks.

The Poleg River - description

The Poleg River is located just south of Netanya, it flows into the sea between the Wingate Institute and Ramat Poleg. It is interesting that the river channel crosses the highway No. 2 and 4, as well as the railway. It feeds on rain water, which drains from the southern hills of the valley.

The length of the river is only 17 km, it bypasses the mountain range and, choosing the way to the west, lies between the coastal dunes. Another interesting fact is that Poleg is one of the few rivers that do not intersect with other water bodies in Israel.

The Poleg River is of great importance to the local population, precisely because it does not dry out. It supports agriculture and feeds wild animals that live on its shores and in the vicinity.

How is the Poleg River interesting for tourists?

Near the river Poleg there are two reserves. The first is the "Poleg Gate Conservation Area", located to the east of Highway No.2, and the second is the "Poleg River Preserve", which is located to the west of Highway No.2.

Here you can see a lot of plants characteristic of the coastal sea belt and fresh water bodies, but among them grow representatives of the realm of flora, characteristic of the desert. There are also animals here, mostly birds, reptiles or small animals.

Travelers are allowed in the reserves for free. You can choose one of the two routes. The difference between them is only that the first is straight, and the second is circular. During a walk it is strictly forbidden to leave the path. Tourists are advised to bring enough water and binoculars. The latter is an indispensable thing for bird watching.

The Poleg River is also interesting for a turtle farm located in the estuary. Sea turtles are released once a year into the sea. On such days tourists come here, who are happy to observe an interesting spectacle.

How to get there?

You can get to the Poleg River as a part of tourist groups or on your own, in a rented car. You can reach it by highway No. 2 or 4.
