Cherry on cherry

Cherry does not have high frost resistance, so its cultivation in regions where the temperature reaches -30-40 ° C in winter is almost impossible, since it is difficult to make a shelter construction for a tree. In this case, you can vaccinate another plant.

What can be planted with cherries?

For the planting of cherries , a bush cherry of such varieties as the Ural ruby, the Lighthouse or the Late Pink is suitable. This will help you get a hybrid with high frost resistance and less whimsical in care. In addition, such cherry becomes flexible, and its branches can easily be bent to the ground. If you take a tree cherry, you get a very tall plant, from which it will be harder to harvest and protect if necessary from frost.

Thanks to the similarity of the structure of these two plants, the vaccine usually gets well. Due to this neighborhood on one tree, the sweet cherry begins to grow more slowly, but the number of fruits does not decrease, so from one bush you can harvest two good crops at different times.

How to plant cherries on a cherry?

It is necessary to administer the cherry inoculation to the cherry in the early spring, tentatively at the end of March, before the sap flow begins, but the air temperature does not drop below 0 ° C at night. If vaccination was done after this time, then the fastest will be unsuccessful. As a rootstock for this procedure, you should choose a shoot or cherry seedling at the age of 2 years, growing on a sunny, sheltered from the wind with a fertile soil. It is not recommended to transplant the plant after inoculation, so you should immediately make the right choice.

There are two ways to vaccinate:

  1. Improved copulation. For this method, cuttings are cut in length of 20 cm with two buds. An incision on the trunk should be done at a height of 20 cm from the ground, cut it is necessary not less than 3-4 cm. After that insert the stem in the trunk and wrap this place with polyethylene.
  2. Budding. From the cherry you need to cut off the 2 cm long flap, which should be inserted into the T-shaped cut on the crown of the cherry. Then wrap the film.

The tape, which is wrapped around the place of vaccination, can be relaxed in the middle of July, and completely removed after the appearance of leaves.

In the first year after the vaccination, the grafted sapling should be tipped to the ground and covered, or after falling snow, sprinkle them. Thus, the plant will be well protected against frost. In the following years, it will not be necessary to do so.
