Church of the Ascension

In the picturesque town of Voss in Norway , located just an hour from Bergen , among the various natural and historical attractions is the famous Church of the Vos.

How was the Church of the Resurrection founded in Norway?

The history of the Church of the Resurrection is unusual and unique, because it is one of the oldest temples in Norway. It was built in the distant 1277. Previously, in its place was a temple of pagans, however, when here in 1023 King Olaf passed and baptized this area, in honor of him in the vicinity of the temple was erected a large cross of stone.

At first the Church of the Vos, like all similar structures, was made of wood. A few years later, in 1271, on the orders of Magnus the Legislator ruling in those days, she was altered in stone. In a new guise, the world saw it in 1277.

The octagonal bell tower, to this day the wooden one, is the only such construction in the whole country. The logs that make up the bell tower are hand-hewn with an ax and are connected by wooden pegs without a single nail.

Over time, the church underwent significant changes - the triptych was rewritten in a different style, new ceilings were painted, the font in the hands of the angel was replaced by a stone one. In the last century, when the Church of the Risen celebrated its 900th anniversary in 1923, beautiful colorful stained-glass windows and a new organ were installed here.

In times of war, unlike other buildings in this area, the temple has not received a single damage and has been perfectly preserved to the present day. Having survived many restorations and changes, now it is open to visitors, while being an active church. In the summer months, you can get here with the tour group, and on Sundays at 11-00 here is the service, as well as many centuries ago.
