How to store cannes in winter?

Cannes is a chic flower, with large bright-colored inflorescences and lush leaves, which will uniquely become an amazing ornament of any garden plot. It is worth noting that cannes are a fairly thermophilic plant, so they need fertile, loose soil, abundant watering, and also in bright sunlight. However, with the onset of cold weather, many beginning gardeners are faced with the problem of preserving planting material. Winter storage of canna and their correct preparation for spring planting has its own peculiarities. This is exactly what will be discussed in this article.

How to store canna in winter?

Cannes, like plants born in tropical conditions, can not tolerate winter in the open ground. Therefore, it is necessary to start preparing for storage from the end of the summer. In the second decade of August, watering should be gradually reduced, and by the time of excavation it is absolutely necessary to stop. Before the first frosts, around the first half of November, the rhizomes are gently excavated from the ground, keeping the earthen lump. Digging fleshy tubers is pretty neat, grabbing the ground with a fairly large radius. After the excavation of tubers should be carefully examined and if there are damaged - to remove. To store cannabis, only healthy tubers with formed kidneys are taken.

There are several ways to store tubers.

  1. With the first method of storage, after excavation it is necessary to cut the cane stalk at a height of 10-15 cm. For reliability, the site of the sections can be treated with some fungicide. Before wintering, the tubers should be slightly dried in a cool room at a temperature of about 10 ° C. Then, together with the earth's clod, the roots are placed in boxes, boxes, buckets or dense plastic bags, topped with enough moist soil or peat and placed in a cool and well ventilated room. The temperature of the air in the room should be stable within + 5-6 ° С (maximum + 8 ° С), it can be a cold verandah, a cellar or a glazed balcony (before frosts).
  2. With a different method of storage, the canna is also gently excavated, the stem is cut at a height of 10-15 cm and cuts are cut with crushed coal or greens. Next, the tubers, together with a clod of earth, are planted in vases, containers or boxes, placed in a well-lit room with a temperature of 12-15 ° C and continue to moderate watering. With this method of storage and care during the winter, cannes form kidneys, and in the spring - their final maturation.

In extreme cases, during the winter cannula bulbs can be stored in the refrigerator. For this, the roots of the plant are washed from the ground, then soaked in a disinfectant solution and dried within a day in the heat. Next, the rhizomes of cannes are wrapped in a damp newspaper, placed in a plastic container and sent to the refrigerator in the spring.

And finally, if you do not want to part with the tropical beauty and want to enjoy its flowering for the new year, you need to dig the plant earlier than in the usual winter, and do not trim its stem. A neatly dug out flower, with still green, full-fledged foliage, is planted in flowerpots with soil, brought into the room and does not cease to water. In the conditions of home storage canes can please the eye for several more months, leaving for rest for only two months of winter. During this period, the plant is not watered, and the leaves dry out, after which they can resume growth in the room again.

Now you know how to properly store cannon bulbs in the winter, it remains only to decide which method is most convenient for you.
