The third largest city in Denmark is Odense . Let's talk about its main attraction - the palace of the same name. Few people know that the world-famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen spent his childhood here. His mother was one of the maids in the palace, and the future writer himself often spent time with the young prince Fritz, who later became Danish Frederick VII.
The history and the present of the palace
The history of the palace of Odense begins with the XV century, when it was a monastery, passed under the rule of the state and became one of the administrative buildings. Initially, the building housed the residence of the signor, then the county administrator was stationed there, then the premises were occupied by the governor, and in the conclusion of the palace municipal services were located. The main building of the palace was erected in 1723 by architect Johan Cornelis Krieger. Nowadays this part of the building remains unchanged from the moment of construction.
The founders of the monastery are Knights Hospitallers, who arrived from the island of Malta in 1280. The church shrine was erected by them, evidently, in 1400 and the following century it grew so much that it became considered the second most important spiritual center of Denmark . The oldest fragments of the modern building are the southern part of the palace, its arches and walls, which date back to the 15th century. In addition, the territory of the monastery preserved many burial places of noble and rich people of that time. This is not surprising, because the church housed a shelter in which the lives of gentlemen and grandees ended.
In 1907 the building was sold to the city's municipality, at the same time the Royal Garden was opened to public, which was located on an area of 0.8 hectares and was a beautiful park and a rare plant. Nowadays there are many trees in the garden that are under protection, since their age exceeds 100 years.
Now in the building of the palace Odense there is a city council, so it is possible to get acquainted with it only from the outside, it is forbidden to enter inside.
