Why can there be a single cord of the umbilical cord around the neck during pregnancy?
Immediately make a reservation that this state is not as dangerous as future mothers think. However, it requires constant monitoring by physicians. The greatest danger in this phenomenon lies in wait for the baby directly in the process of giving birth. Therefore, midwives always monitor the position of the fetus in the uterus, if a whip is found. In most cases, deliveries with a single cord entanglement take place without complications.
If we talk directly about the reasons for which this phenomenon is observed, then, as a rule, it is:
- too long umbilical cord (more than 70 cm). As a rule, the length of the umbilical cord itself depends on hereditary factors;
- polyhydramnios - a large amount of amniotic fluid provides the fetus with more space for free movements, as a result of which the accent may develop;
- hypoxia, developed as a result of disruption of the placental system, can lead to increased motor activity of the fetus, which in turn leads to the development of a single, non-folded cord around the neck of the fetus.
In addition to the above reasons, a similar situation can develop and accidentally.
How is the diagnosis of this phenomenon carried out?
The detection of such a violation is possible only with the help of ultrasound diagnostics. However, even when, as a result of the study, a cord of the umbilical cord was found once around the neck of the fetus, this does not mean that it will remain so until the moment of delivery.
The development of such a situation is possible in two directions: the baby will unravel and the crochet will disappear or, on the contrary, instead of a single accent, there will be a double. Therefore, very important in this case is the conduct of ultrasound in dynamics. According to medical statistics, only 10% of such situations end in various complications.
Particular attention in the diagnosis of this condition is given to the blood flow. Determine its violations by using cardiotocography. It is precisely this that makes it possible to determine precisely whether the present collision leads to hypoxia. In the presence of hypoxia, dopplerometry is performed, which allows to determine the intensity of blood flow.
If there are suspicions of the possibility of developing hypoxia, the research is carried out repeatedly, because when the position of the fetus changes, the condition of the baby can also change.
What should I do with a single cord with the umbilical cord?
Almost before the 37th week of pregnancy, doctors do not focus on this situation, unless the accusation leads to the development of hypoxia. As a rule, this situation can appear and disappear several times before the beginning of the birth process. Therefore, any special measures in this regard, doctors do not take, watching the state of the baby and the mother herself.
The greatest danger for the baby is a tight, not single, but multiple cord wrap around the neck. As a rule, in such cases, the development of oxygen starvation is almost inevitable. Such a condition can cause a violation of intrauterine development, as well as the work of the whole organism: metabolic processes change, adaptive possibilities decrease, the nervous system of the fetus is damaged, etc. A similar situation can also lead to a violation of the blood supply to the upper extremities and neck. If there is a strong pull of the umbilical cord, as a result of shortening its length due to a collision around the neck, then there is a possibility of premature detachment of the placenta and sudden delivery.
