Galactocele of the breast

Galactocele of the breast is one of the varieties of the cyst, formed as a result of blockage or obstruction of its ducts. This disease occurs in breastfeeding women. With it, milk accumulates in the cystic cavity, which is localized near the nipple. The second name of the disease is fatty cyst.

Stagnation of milk in the enlarged cavity of the cyst can lead to the attachment to the galactocele of mastitis or the abscess of the breast.

Causes of galactocele

Until now, the exact causes of cyst formation are unknown. The main version is the change in the physical properties of the milk gland stagnant in the duct. In other words, there is coagulation of breast milk. However, with this disease children are also exposed, which casts doubt on this version.

Manifestations

When palpation of the breast, some seals are found, and in other cases, stony formations. In this case, the woman is troubled by aching pains.

Diagnostics

The diagnosis of galactocele is not particularly difficult. The main method used for suspected cases is ultrasound of the mammary glands . When it is carried out, the doctor discovers a sharply dilated lactiferous duct, which often has an ovoid form. When mammography is performed, the formation of a rounded shape with a rim is detected.

Treatment

The main method of treatment of galactocele of the breast is thin-needle puncture. It is carried out exclusively under the control of the ultrasound machine. During the puncture, the doctor performs aspiration of the contents of the cyst.

In the case where the puncture did not produce the expected result, and a relapse occurred, an open surgery is performed, in which the cyst cavity is opened and drainage is established. If galactocele is large, the main method of treatment is sector resection .
