Ligament of the uterus

The position of the uterus in the small pelvis, as well as of the ovaries, the vagina and a number of located organs is completely dependent on the condition of the ligament of the uterus. In a normal physiological state, the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes are held by a suspensory apparatus (ligaments supporting the uterus), fixing apparatus (fixing the uterus of the ligament), and a support apparatus (pelvic floor).

What ligaments does the uterus have?

Uterus has the following paired ligaments: broad, round, cardinal and sacral-uterine.

  1. Wide ligaments are the anterior and posterior peritoneal sheets that extend directly from the margins of the uterus and are attached to the walls of the pelvic cavity. At the highest part of them are the fallopian tubes. The outer part of the broad ligaments forms a funnel-pelvic ligament in which arteries approach the ovaries.
  2. A dense site located in the lowest section of the broad ligaments is called cardinal ligaments. The peculiarity of them is that it is in them that the uterine vessels pass, and also a part of the ureters. The space between the individual sheets of the widest ligament is filled with fiber and forms a parameter.
  3. Round ligaments of the uterus , according to anatomical features, move away from each side of the uterus, and descend somewhat lower and more anterior to the fallopian tubes themselves. They end in the inguinal canals, or rather in the upper part of the large labia. The sacro-uterine ligaments are represented by connective tissue as well as muscle fibers that cover the peritoneum.

Why do ligaments of the uterus hurt?

Often women, during pregnancy complain to doctors about pain in the abdominal region, not knowing that it hurts the ligament of the uterus. This phenomenon is easily explained. As you grow, increase the size of the fetus, it takes more space. As a result, there is a stretching of the ligament of the uterus, which during pregnancy is a normal process. In this case, a woman experiences a different nature and varying intensity of pain: from pulling, stitching to cutting. If the pain is observed frequently, the doctor prescribes pain medications.

Often the pain in the ligament of the uterus is caused by large fetal sizes or a multiple pregnancy, which leads to their hyperextension.

In rare cases, pain in the uterine ligaments can result from a recent surgical procedure. In such cases, doctors, together with anti-inflammatory, prescribe pain medication. As a rule, this treatment is carried out in a hospital and under the strict supervision of specialists.
