Museum of the Armed Forces of Norway


The main military museum of Norway is the Armed Forces Museum, located near the Akershus fortress , on the territory of the outer bastion, building 62.

History of creation

The museum was founded in 1946, after the merger of the Museum of Artillery and the Quartermaster Museum. The unified organization was named Hærmuséet - Army Museum. In the first years of the exposition, the expositions were opened only for servicemen. In 1978, under the decree of King Olaf V, the landmark, already called the Museum of the Armed Forces, opened the doors to the general public.

What is the purpose of the museum?

The main objective of the museum is to provide reliable information that affects the military history of Norway from the time of the Vikings to our days. The museum exposition is divided into 6 thematic sections:

  1. Ancient times. Here you will learn the specifics of military affairs from the time of the Vikings until 1814.
  2. The development of military affairs in the period from 1814 to 1905.
  3. The military history of Norway from 1905 to 1940.
  4. Grandiose land battles during the Second World War.
  5. Naval battles during the Second World War.
  6. Military history of the country from 1945 to the present.

Uniqueness The Museum of the Armed Forces of Norway consists of extremely realistic expositions. They depict fragments of the country's military history in different epochs. At the same time, it is possible to see interesting installations using manikins in the military uniform of the past, military equipment, weapons, miniature fortresses and battlefields. The most memorable exhibits can be called a cannon on skis, a howit designed in the Norwegian outback, the uniform of the past. Sometimes in the museum exhibited mobile thematic expositions.
