Among the vast Mediterranean Sea, not far from the famous Sicily is the Maltese archipelago, consisting of three islands - Comino , Malta and Gozo . The most populated and visited is Malta, which is the famous village of Popeye (Popeye Village).
Popeye Village Malta
Thanks to the fact that the Hollywood companies Paramount and Walt Disney decided to make a musical film about the pope Popeya, an authentic village of Svitheven appeared. Its construction lasted more than six months from 1979 to 1980. The idea was to recreate the famous comic books painted by Elsi Segar, the author of the famous Popeye.
165 construction workers took part in the construction, who managed to build 19 wooden houses - exact copies of comic books from the forest, brought from Canada itself. In order to save the village from destruction during the storm, it was decided to build a seventy-meter concrete pier in a picturesque bay called Anchor Bay. Not so long ago, he saved the buildings almost 30 years after the erection, although he himself suffered considerably.
The idea of building a village Popeye in Malta was a failure, as it did not justify the invested funds. It was closed and for many years forgotten. Subsequently, the reconstruction began and now it is a famous entertainment complex.
What to see in the village of Popeye?
By purchasing a ticket at the entrance to the park or Malta Disneyland, visitors receive a card that contains a schedule of all kinds of events held throughout the day. This includes a puppet show, the search for a real treasure on a treasure map, drawing a merry aquagrim in local themes.
In addition, the patriots can participate in the design of the airplane and launch it into the sky, and also engage in fishing in the way that the famous seaman Popeye himself fished.
Visitors can taste local wines, go for free on a boat in the bay, see the costumed improvisation of an old wedding procession, and enjoy watching a movie in an old wooden cinema with modern technology.
In the summer in the bay there are many water attractions for adults and children. Visitors can visit the ice cream factory and taste its products, as well as see how life in the local Santa Claus workshop is on the eve of Christmas (December 25).
As before, movies are shot here, in which tourists can take part as actors. While children are entertained by all kinds of animators, parents can safely spend time in local cafes, where they offer fast food and simple Mediterranean food with an abundance of seafood.

How to get to the village of Popeye?
Since Popeye Village is located remotely from settlements, it is hardly possible to walk there on foot. To do this, there are special buses running between the cities and the amusement park in the village of Popeye:
- From Valletta: bus number 4, 44;
- From Sliema: bus number 645;
- From Mellieha: bus number 441 (in winter once an hour, in the summer every hour from 10.00 to 16.00).
In addition, you can see the sights of Papaya village in Malta by renting a car.
Working hours of the village
This unique village, consisting of wooden buildings, is open to visitors all year round. The cost of the visit is about 10 euros. But tourists need to know that the opening hours here are different depending on the time of year:
- from 1 to 20 December - open from 9.30 to 19.30;
- from December 21 to January 6 - working hours from 9.30 to 20.30;
- from March to December - 9.30 to 17.00.
