Cuttings of grapes

For vine-growers, it's no secret that propagation of grapes by cuttings is not difficult and gives tangible results. Cuttings can be green or lignified. Green cuttings are harvested in the spring approximately 2 weeks before the vine blossoms. Their main difference is that the rooting should be started immediately, and cuttings themselves cut in the morning and so that on each shoot there were at least 2 knots. Green cuttings of grapes assume a day of holding cuttings in water, and then planting in a suitable substrate. During the first month cuttings should be covered with a film to maintain high humidity, and the temperature should be at least 25 ° C. Then the shoots that have moved to growth are gradually accustomed to fresh air, but it is better to plant them in a permanent place for the next year.

Autumnal propagation of grapes

This method of propagation is most common because at the end of autumn the vine is filled with nutrients and is completely formed, so rooting and growth of such cuttings occurs much faster. Storage of grape cuttings can be up to six months, it is enough to observe a few simple conditions.

Of great importance is the correct choice of cuttings, the vine should not be old (no more than 2 years), the cuttings should be even, without damage or disease. Optimum is the presence on each cut of three internodes, and the thickness of the cuttings directly indicates the concentration of nutrients in it, preferably if it is 7-8 mm.

Before storing the cuttings, it is necessary to tie, mark the variety, stand in the water for a day, then sprinkle a solution of 3% copper sulphate for disinfection or immerse the binder into it for a few seconds. After such treatment cuttings during storage will not dry up, mold will not appear.

How to save cuttings of grapes?

The storage of cuttings is of great importance for the subsequent rooting. Many store them in plastic bags in a ventilated room at a temperature of 3-6 ° C. No less popular is the way to keep harvested cuttings in the sand, when digging a pit to half a meter deep, horizontal cuttings are laid there and poured over them with damp sand. When everything is laid, put a wooden control cover on top, and then fall asleep with wet sand to the top. When digging up to the lid, you can use a shovel, and after you remove it, cuttings must be carefully dug by hand so as not to damage them. The method is certainly effective, but not the most convenient.

It is convenient to store cuttings in plastic bottles, for a large number of cuttings you can use bottles of 5 liters of drinking water. Cut off the bottoms of the bottoms and fold the cuttings into one of them. Then, after making a couple of cuts on the second bottle, put it on top of the first one so that the necks at you are from the ends of the cuttings. You can sign the grade directly on the bottles with a marker, and wind the cuttings simply, just unscrew the plugs from the bottles of the bottles.

Cutting of the girlish grape

Girlish grapes can be propagated in the same way as any other. It is believed that lignified cuttings are better rooted and grow faster, while green cuttings involve the creation of certain conditions, for example, artificially created fog to maintain a certain moisture content.

Whichever way you choose, make sure that the vineyards from which you take the cuttings are not infected with a phylloxera that ruins the whole vine.
