This berries are very much appreciated not only for their useful properties, but also for their taste. Not so long ago, bushes were sick, and gardeners rarely took risks and bought new elite varieties. But when the market appeared reliable means of powdery mildew , fire and other uninvited guests, new vegetable plants began to appear on each vegetable garden. Today, every self-respecting horticulturist has at least five gooseberry varieties on the site. Gooseberries without thorns: varieties

During picking berries, a rare gardener remains without any abrasions or cuts. Sharp and quite massive thorns sometimes discourage any desire to collect such delicious berries. The problem was solved quite simply: varieties without thorns were brought to the market.

For unknown reasons, there is an opinion that varieties of gooseberries without thorns have not the most vivid taste of berries. But in fact the presence of spikes does not affect the taste of the crop at all. There are varieties with a rather weak taste, and there are very sweet berries. By the way, there are no beech sorts completely. Some simply have very small and soft needles, while others grow spines only a few years later the field of fruiting. Here are the most successful grades of bumper gooseberry:

  1. Malachite . This variety has quite a few spikes and they are evenly distributed, which facilitates harvesting. The berries have a greenish color and a very thin cuticle. Due to its special taste, this variety is best suited for making compotes and cooking.
  2. Grushenka . Spikes on the bushes are almost invisible. The berries are pear-shaped. The fully ripened harvest has a dark rich shade of berries, small seeds and a pleasant taste.
  3. Kolobok . The bush is almost completely devoid of spines, for which it is valued among gardeners. Refers to early large-fruited varieties. Unfortunately, the size of the berries and the abundance of the harvest are not supported by the special taste.

Varieties of the largest gooseberry

If the presence of spines does not scare you and you are looking for large berries, then choose seedlings from a series of large-fruited varieties. Among them, the majority were selected by British breeders.

  1. London . This large-bodied gooseberries among all varieties has the largest berries, the weight of which reaches 54 g. But to grow it is a whole science. The fact is that it blooms very early and often falls under the spring frosts. So even a mild climate will not always be a simplification of the task.
  2. Monstrosis . The berries are not much smaller, have a sweet taste and a rich reddish color. But this variety can grow only on condition of good lighting. At the slightest shading or untimely pruning, the yield drops sharply.
  3. Lemon gigantic . Among the large-fruited varieties of yellow gooseberry, it has the largest berries. They are really very similar to small lemons. Fruits are perfectly stored, have a beautiful lemon color with wide veins.

What kind of gooseberries to choose?

All varieties of gooseberries are conventionally divided into different groups. According to the maturation period, early, middle and late varieties are distinguished. As a rule, summer residents try to plant two or three varieties from each group and thereby provide the family with fresh berries for the whole season. The best grades of gooseberries of each group that we grow are listed below.

  1. Early . Really good grades are not so much. It is worth highlighting Eaglet, with sweet and sour small berries. Also grow varieties Yarovoy and White Nights.
  2. Medium . One of the most popular is the variety of gooseberry honey. He is appreciated for excellent taste. The sugar content in berries is up to 17%. It is this type of gooseberries that are the sweetest. Gardeners gladly grow it, despite the small berries and quite a large number of thorns.
  3. Late . Among the domestic varieties of the largest gooseberry is Gentle. The bush is tall, practically without thorns. The berries have a greenish color, after full ripening they acquire a pink shade. Great as a hedge.
