How is spirography performed?

Spirography is a method of diagnosing the state of the lungs and bronchi. With the help of this procedure, it is possible at an early stage to identify acute and chronic bronchopulmonary pathologies of various origins. It is often performed to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic procedures, which are used to treat workers in harmful industries.

How is spirography performed?

Most people do not know how spirography is done, and they are worried about the appointment of such a procedure. But do not worry. This study is absolutely painless, does not require special training and will only take a few minutes.

If a person takes bronchodilators, they should be canceled one day before the prescribed procedure. You can not eat in the morning before spirography. One hour before the study, it is better not to smoke and drink coffee, and for 15-20 minutes, you should stop any physical activity.

The technique of spirography is as follows:

1. The patient sits down.
2. The height of the seat and the oral tube are adjusted to a comfortable state (tilting the head and pulling the neck is prohibited).
3. A clamp is put on the patient's nose.
4. The person tightly covers the mouthpiece, so that there is no air leakage.
5. The patient on command starts a breathing maneuver.

Immediately after the person begins to breathe, the respiratory volume is measured, which is calculated as the average value of six or more respiratory cycles in a calm mode. It is also necessary to estimate the respiratory rate at rest, the volume of the maximum full inspiration and the extremely sharp and prolonged expiration. Some patients are given the task - for 20 seconds to breathe with maximum depth and frequency. When performing this test, dizziness or darkening in the eyes may occur.

Contraindications to spirography

The technique of spirography allows to confirm the diagnosis of bronchial asthma , to reveal the type and degree of pulmonary insufficiency, ventilation failure and many bronchopulmonary diseases. But there are a number of situations when this survey is prohibited. These include:

• severe general condition of the patient;
• angina pectoris ;
• severe toxicosis in pregnancy;
• myocardial infarction
• severe circulatory failure;
• severe pulmonary insufficiency.

Also, contraindications for spirography are arterial hypertension and hypertensive crisis.
