How to transplant an orchid into a bigger pot?

The most important thing that should be understood by a budding floriculturist is that the orchid does not grow in the soil as such. In their natural place of growth, these plants are clinging to the bark of trees. Therefore, do not think that if an orchid climbs roots from a pot, it should immediately be transferred to a large and spacious pot.

Size of a pot for an orchid

Large pots for this plant in general you will not need. Typically, its standard size is within 12 cm. It is rare when the orchid can be transplanted into the pot a little more, as the root system develops relatively slowly, and they need light and air. The maximum size of it in the flower shop is 15 cm.

Do not rush to transplant the orchid into a larger pot, since with a large space you will get lush greenery, but the flowering will clearly be delayed. Also, too much free space with ground in the hill contributes to the caking of the soil, which will adversely affect the roots, leading to their decay.

If the orchid has clearly grown from a pot, its green mass has sharply increased, it is possible to change the pot, but it should be slightly different from the previous one.

How to transplant an orchid into another pot?

Conditionally the whole process will be divided into three stages. Planting orchids in a pot will consist of these steps:

  1. The first thing to look closely is whether the root of the pot is so deeply embedded that it can not be removed. Most likely, you will have to sacrifice a pot. If the roots do not cover the pot, you can start working. Soft plastic and bark as a substrate will allow you to easily remove the flower. If we are dealing with a hard hill or moss, you will first have to soften it with water. Remember, that transplanting an orchid into another pot is difficult because of the roots, and since they are very fragile, everything will have to be done very neatly and smoothly.
  2. Roots thoroughly rinse under running warm water and leave them to dry. Normally the color of the roots varies from tender green to silvery. All dead or obviously soft rotten parts should be cut off. The dried leaves are removed, the yellow leaves are left in place.
  3. For planting orchids in the pot, the most important is good drainage, at least two centimeters. Then we insert the plant and gradually pour the substrate into the pot. Place a piece of foam under the base so that the wet bark does not touch the root collar. In addition, you can make holes in the pot and insert sticks to fix the plant. Above put a little moss.
