AFP and hCG

In order to follow the correct development of the fetus and to reveal in time various abnormalities in its development, a woman is offered to donate blood from the vein to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This analysis is also called a triple test, because the level of free estriol is also taken into account. The most informative is the result of the analysis, taken at a period of 14 to 20 weeks.

For the AFP and hCG screening results to be as accurate as possible, it is necessary to observe some simple rules, namely, to give blood on an empty stomach or 4-5 hours after the last meal. It is best if the blood sample is taken in the morning.

The rate of AFP and hCG

To find out what norm of this or that analysis in different terms of pregnancy you need to turn to a special table. But do not panic if any one of the results does not comply with the established standard, because the calculation takes a set of several indicators, not one of them.

Be that as it may, it is not worthwhile to set yourself an intimidating diagnosis yourself, and you need to consult a knowledgeable expert for advice. In some laboratories the results are calculated in MoM units. Here the rate varies from 0.5 MoM to 2.5 MoM.

What are the abnormalities in the analysis of AFP and hCG in pregnancy?

If the results of the triple test performed are far from the presented norm (much higher), then this can lead to the following consequences:

In the case where the numbers indicate an understated result, the following deviations are possible:

By law, a woman has the right to refuse a triple test. There are cases when, contrary to the diagnoses, a completely healthy baby is born. If the result of the analysis raises doubts, it should be retaken in another laboratory.
